Working in Long Term Disaster Recovery
Guest Blogger: Carla Williams, Our Front Porch Intern 2016-17
Moving to Colorado less than 5 months ago, was nothing short of my biggest life decision. I knew University of Denver was offering me a chance to be a part of an amazing program I couldn’t pass up. Within our program, we are required to partner with a local internship for field experience. That was when I encountered Our Front Porch.

From left to right, Carla, Heather and Sarah presenting Our Front Porch’s services at the Arapahoe County Resource Fair.
Maggie and Heather were exactly the people I needed to meet to reaffirm I was in the right field of work. These two women took a dream and made it their reality. Luckily, I was on-boarded and since then have been given the opportunity to work with some talented individuals. Maggie and Heather teach me something new every day while also giving me the freedom to explore and learn new things myself.
Working with a startup disaster recovery company is a challenge as we work with clients who have been in traumatic situations. At the end of the day however, the passion social workers, psychologists, and an architect can all share for the same thing is what encourages us to help those in need.
